The Pichler family has been making wine in the village of Wösendorf since at least the late 19th century. The original cellar building, more of a small stall than a winery, was purchased in 1884, and their first vineyards were planted in 1904. Wosendorf is nestled between the foothills of the Alps and the upper section of the Danube River, which flows east from Melk to Krems, forming a tiny but brilliant series of terroirs within the 1,350 hectares of the Wachau (VOCK-aw) Valley. Steep hillsides hugging the river are formed of ancient Gföhler Gneiss, a particular primary rock, as well as granite and some slate deposits and other soils which, combined with the area’s unique and faceted microclimates, produce the distinct wines of the Wachau.

About the Vineyard

This fruit is sourced from terraced sites in the western end of the valley, where warm days and cool nights underscore minerality and structure. Federspiel is a designation of ripeness used exclusively by members of the Vinea Wachau for dry wines between 11.5 and 12.5% abv. The grapes are hand-harvested, typically in October, and are sent directly to press, fermented using natural yeasts, and vinified entirely in stainless-steel tanks.

Tasting Notes

This vintage relied heavily on the expertise and diligence of Rudi Pichler, as growing conditions were challenging with intense heat and rain. Even by Rudi’s typically stringent standards, a highly demanding selection process, often coming down to individual berry selection, resulted in very low yields, but of clean perfect fruit. The reward is a harmonious, luminous and graceful wine with focused acidity, fine minerality and fragrant aromatics with a burst of characteristic Gruner freshness.

Food Pairing

Versatile Gruner Veltliner, with its high acidity and intricate, varied palette of flavors, embraces a wide variety of foods as diverse as crispy Wiener Schnitzel, spicy spring rolls with chile dipping sauce, forest mushrooms or sweetbreads. Gruners taste especially delicious paired with spicy Thai or Asian inspired dishes as the cool tones interplay with the spices, leaving the palate refreshed and ready for the next bite.
