Salzberg 2013

Heinrich

Salzberg is one of the oldest and best vineyard slopes in Gols. Southwest facing, it has a broad range of soil types dominated by red gravel from the Ice Age mixed with fine-grained sandy loam, clay, limestone and sand.  Merlot, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt all ripen to perfection in a relatively small space, because each variety grows in its own optimal soil.

Wine Production

The grapes were hand harvested in mid-October 2013, then processed according to the gravity principle. The grapes were macerated for three weeks on the skins, and spontaneously fermented in barrels with manual pumping over for 4 - 6 weeks, followed by a gentle basket press. The wine was then aged for 30 months in 500 liter wooden barrels.

Tasting Notes

Dark ruby-garnet colour with an opaque core and a touch of violet slightly on the rim. The nose is ethereal with notes of sweet forest berry fruit, fine herbs, soft tobacco and some pleasant noble wood. Richly faceted. The palate is compact and powerful, with firm, sweet tannins that give enormous length to the wine. Nuances of chocolate, orange zest, juicy berries, and wood spices in the finish.

Food Pairing

Pair with pasta alla carbonara, pork ribs, or rabbit with thyme.
