The Blaufränkisch Leithaberg is a selection of older vines on the Leitha hills, located in Winden, Jois and Breitenbrunn. Leithaberg is a new DAC as of 2009 on the western shore of Lake Neusidl for both white and red wines, the reds being based on Blaufränkisch (minimum 85%). Both red and white wines from the Leithaberg posses a strong mineral character owed to limestone-rich soils.  Smack your lips after you sip the wine, they will taste of salt.

The Blaufränkisch grapes were hand harvested in October. Following selection in the vineyards and the winery, they were processed according to the gravity principle without pumps. Spontaneous fermentation occurred in barrels and went through punchdown maceration for 4-5 weeks. The wine was then matured for 18 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Dark ruby-garnet hue with a violet reflection. Intensely soft smokiness underscores the morello and heart cherry fruit, the fine touch of slate and the multifaceted herb-laced bouquet. Juicy and elegant with a vibrant acidity structure. Good length with spicy minerality and subtle saltiness. Still very young.

Food Pairing

The smokiness and rich fruit profile of this wine make it an excellent pairing for barbecued ribs, Peking duck, or grilled lamb chops.
